Anatomy

Anatomical Relationship to Flora

Varsyllus are plant and tree based creatures. They share an innate connection with all flora and soil itself. Varsyllus cannot be without light for too long as they require it as a natural part of their body functions. Their skin has a leafy texture and can range from brittle to waxy. When cut or damaged, they bleed a substance similar to aloe vera. Water drips easily off their skin, allowing them to do well during rainy seasons.

Eyes

Varsyllus eyes are large and do not contain an iris or a pupil. Just like their veins they too glow under low light and provide the Varsyllus the ability to see in the dark. This helps considering the majority of their territory lies beneath large trees and creates a lot of shade.

Veins

Veins are a Varsyllus’ primary form of anatomical marking. Veins span the length of a Varsyllus’ body and can be found from head to toe. Each marking pattern is different and unique from one Varsyllus to another. Patterns can diversify in terms of shape, thickness of veins, placement, and frequency. Facial markings are the most noticeable and will usually congregate around certain anatomical features. These being: upper lips, chins, brows, and cheeks. Varsyllian veins are a physical manifestation of their essence as part of their anatomy, and are a connection between their body and soul. Varsyllian veins will glow when under low light, as will their eyes, and both will usually share a similar hue.

Local Skin Color Variation and Markings

Varsyllian have the possibility of having local skin color variations, similar to blushing or the appearance of blood underneath the skin. They can also have various markings on their skin such as speckling, variegation, or other patterns not related to their vein markings.

Abilities

Varsyllus have many abilities, and they have spent years perfecting and studying how far their skills can be translated and how powerful they can become. Varsyllus can heal, manipulate plant growth, camouflage themselves, and perform enchantments, hexes and incantations, and are masters at potion brewing. Some Varsyllus can also summon roots, and vines. Others sometimes have defensive poison mechanisms.

Culture

Crafts

Varsyllus are adept craftspeople practicing many disciplines in a variety of occupations within their society. Taught as early as the start of their childhood young Varsyllus are shown the importance of working with their hands and constructing items from all types of materials.

Some crafts fit into the category of produced goods, meaning they are bought and sold within local markets and are constructed by skilled artisans. Other items are made personally for usage within the home and some are passed down through generations as heirlooms. Heirlooms, and the practice of passing down, is a highly respected piece of Varsyllian culture. These items usually possess a specific level of meaning towards the family, its history, and those who were apart of it.

Propogation

The propagation of herbs make for a useful resource in a Varsyllian kitchen. It is also a spiritual practice denoting the patience, upkeep, and effort of upholding and creating life. Plants provide Varsyllus with a sense of peace, fulfillment and connection to their world. Keeping plants in the home is a sign of a blessed household. However, glassware is not so easily crafted in Varsyllian territory as usable resources for the product are hard to come by and refine through regular and sustainable means. Varsyllus get around this limitation by enchanting pottery to appear see-through.

Medical Practices and Healing

The Varsyllus are known to be adept and knowledgeable healers. Utilizing their knowledge of their abilities and their surrounding forest territory to their advantage. Healing and medicinal practices divide into two categories: Essence Healing and Botanical Healing. Essence healing uses Varsyllian power to infuse, enchant, and reconstitute their patients. Botanical healing uses exclusively plants to aid the healing process. Essence Healing is referred to as [] and Botanical Healing is known as [].

One way of utilizing botanicals for the purpose of protecting a wound is with fungi. Specific breeds of Varsyllian fungi such as [], [], and [] can be repurposed for sterile bandages. The fruit of the fungi are harvested and with a clean blade the top layer of flesh is removed from their surface, it is then placed on the wound and self-adheres to the skin and wound. Protecting and sterilizing it with a secure seal. The rest of the fungi can be consumed raw as a snack or cooked for use in a meal.

Varsyllus are quiet and stoic creatures. They believe in living peacefully amongst the nature of their territory and within their body of people. Logically oriented, Varsyllus tend to take the emotion out of situation and circumstance to seek answers that are fair, thought out, and carefully implemented.

Scholarship

Varsyllian scholarship begins after the age of puberty depending on discipline. A young Varsyllus may decide to become an apprentice to a craft or trade of their choosing to which they will spend the majority of their time outside of public education attending to the study of. If a young Varsyllian chooses to become an academic scholar their public education will extend after the basic requirements are met.

System of Public Education

The Varsyllian public education system is an amenity provided by the government for the purpose of providing the youth with a well-structured learning environment for the majority of their childhood and early adulthood. In more rural areas of the territory the task of education is taken upon the village or family of the child. They will teach the child the fundamentals of the world around them, their familial trade, and the history of their culture and people.

Varsyllian children are taught the following from ages 4-16:

  • Varsyllian History and Culture

  • Tactics for Survival within the Varsyllian Wilderness

  • Wren (Language)

  • Basic Mathematics

  • Meditation

  • Cultural Crafts

  • Basic Handling of Varsyllian Abilities

  • Geography

Following the completion of the required 16 year period young Varsyllian may choose to expand their studies, begin down the path of a trade, or become a civil servant.

Tradeship

If a young Varsyllus chooses to seek a trade for their education they become an apprentice to a currently serving adult in that position. Usually the young Varsyllus is paired up with a family friend or member of the community that they already have some type of relationship or association towards. For the next four years they will undergo the study of their chosen trade until they are an adult. After this point their mentor may choose to take them on as a fully-fledged partner or employee within their business or choose to hand over their business to their apprentice if they are at the end of their life. A Varsyllus can only be a mentor to an apprentice once they have served a minimum of 12 years in their chosen profession.

Scholarship

If a young Varsyllus chooses to seek a scholarship for their education they must undergo a series of qualifications and tests to pass the barrier to entry. Scholarship populations are limited to those who display an aptitude to take on the challenge of a scholarship.

Upon passing they are sent to the academic sphere in the capital of Osveria. This is the only location within the Varsyllian territory that has institutions for higher education. Here the Varsyllus will dedicate themselves to a specific topic of their choice where they will work to eventually advance the subject or further catalog information on it. Once finishing their four years of scholarship they may also choose to train and hone their abilities for the sake of advanced study in the form of a Mageship. If not they continue work as an Academic Scholar.

Varsyllian Mages are individuals who have completed their study in an advanced topic and are looking to utilize their abilities to better understand, experiment, and push the boundary of their discipline.

Military Service

If the Varsyllus does not desire to undergo a trade or scholarship they have the chance to undergo military training as a part of the government's national security program. During this time they will be physically challenged through a regimen of expanding their abilities, strength, endurance, speed, and agility.

Religion

The Varsyllus are a religious body but are not practicing in the way where they let religion guide their day-to-day actions. They rather lean on their religious beliefs for a sense of general direction and when making big decisions. There is no semblance of routine prayer or required practices. Prayer, sacrifice, and rites only occur when the Varsyllian is compelled to do so.

However, they do have set holidays where they observe and give back to their faith in a meaningful way. It is also very important to a Varsyllus to allow their deities to be present within their homes to receive favor during specific times of year.

The Four Dieties

The Varsyllian Religion [] exists to recognize, respect, and serve their four gods of the seasons: Aanik, Reqiv, Valiq, and Telo each representing the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. During their four recognized holidays they pay homage and thanks to each god representing that season. Offering them ways to enter their home and paying their respects to the blessings they have brought to their tables.

Prayer and Spiritualism

The Varsyllian people are spiritual individuals. They see themselves as conjoined but somewhat separated from the natural world in their bipedal phase of life. Thus they respect their surroundings to the utmost extent. Whenever a Varsyllus takes from the natural world they perform a minor prayer ritual in thanks and sacrifice. This can be administered in a variety of ways from minor chants to prostration and mediation. The degree is usually dependent on what is being taken, how much of it, and whether it was previously alive, plant, animal, or a natural resource. When a Varsyllus house is built a monk comes to provide their blessing and to absolve the structure from its origins. Sometimes runes are administers onto the structure as another element. Prayers are also painted onto weapons and hands as an easy blessing for the resource.

Corpse Painting and Funerals

When a Varsyllus dies they are ritually planted in their home soil, so that they can begin their next cycle of reincarnation. These bodies are ceremoniously painted with square markings and runes, sometimes for protection, absolution, or as a way to highlight what made them unique in their first life. Paint is comprised of natural pigments, and colors that contrast with the skin are chosen. The event during which the corpse is painted is called a [] or in common speak, a Wilt.

Festivals and Holidays

The Varsyllus calendar contains four major holidays for each of the four seasons of the year. Each holiday celebrates the cycle of blooming and bounty of plant life within the Varsyllian territory and takes place during the peak of the season.

Spring - Aanik - The Dancing of the Flowers

Varsyllians decorate city streets and homes with budding branches and plants that bloom on the day of the holiday. When the petals of the blooms fall they create a carpet of color signifying that the festivities are over and that the spirit of spring: Aanik has paved the way to summer.

Summer - Reqiv - The Verdance of the Branches

As the leaves on the trees begin to open and the forest is covered with a canopy of green, the Varsyllus prepare for the summer months. Varsyllians collect branches and trim dead branches from trees to place in dry storehouses for the cold fall and winter cycles ahead. Green leaves from trimmings are collected and used to decorate doors as a reminder of the national color of the Varsyllians: green and as a way of welcoming the spirit of summer: Reqiv into their homes.

Autumn - Valiq - The Bounty of the Soil and Gilding of the Forest

When the trees begin to turn and the harvest season approaches is when this autumnal holiday starts. Varsyllians collect and keep the highest quality goods from their harvest and combine them together into a feast of the best Varsyllians have to offer to one another. The dinners are usually held communally and each family possesses a signature dish that they bring involving a good that their family produces. Sometimes craft goods are exchanged to neighbors and relatives as a means of gratitude. The golden leaves of the trees are collected into bouquets and placed as centerpieces to thank the spirit of autumn: Valiq.

Winter - Telo - The Blessings of Years Past

During this winter tradition Varsyllians retrieve fermented and preserved goods from their storehouses to remember the blessings and bounty they were provided with during the year.

Fallen pine cones, conifer branches, and holly decorate the eves of the houses and ask for protection from the spirit of winter: Telo.

Language

The Varsyllus possess two distinct languages as apart of everyday usage and communication: Wrenqi and Evros.

Wrenqi

Wrenqi is the common language of the Varsyllus and is both spoken and written. Wrenqi is written with common letters specifically and is seen in everything from regular speech, to literature, and religious prayer. Many interactions between Evros and Wrenqi exist and Wrenqi is usually intended to clarify how Evros as a language is intended to function.

Evros

Evros is the written only language of the Varsyllus. Used for encoding and formatting Varsyllian knowledge, Evros is used to consolidate ideas and keep information hidden only to those who are allowed to learn and utilize the language. Varsyllian scholars are the only individuals allowed to learn and understand every facet of Evros and can translate and understand the majority of texts. Other individuals only learn Evros for understanding information pertaining to their occupations or everyday life. Classes to learn Evros are conducted within the capital city of Osveria or are done by traveling scholars who traverse the territory of the Varsyllus to bring education to remote areas. Foreigners are strictly forbidden from participating or understanding any of this language.

Evros Idik is an offshoot of Evros used for the enchantment and enhancement of spells and incantations into objects to give them other worldly properties.
